Owner's Engineering for battery storage in Germany.

Biberger Engineering is an independent engineering firm for grid-connected battery energy storage systems (BESS) from 1 to 250 MW, based in Munich. We work for investors, asset owners and developers, including companies entering the German market: from grid connection through procurement to acceptance.

Who we are

Owner-managed, senior engineer on every mandate.

Michael Biberger, M.Sc. in electrical engineering, handles every mandate personally. We therefore take on a limited number of mandates at a time. Specialist partners are brought in as needed, either as our subcontractors with a defined scope or engaged directly by the client.

His personal experience from previous roles includes BESS system design, the design of transformers and substations, the negotiation of grid connection agreements, and two years working in Shanghai with suppliers in China.

We do not accept commissions from manufacturers or suppliers. Manufacturers and EPC contractors are what we review, not our clients.

Three entry points

Where to start.

Each can be commissioned on its own. We review, assess and recommend; decisions stay with you.

Procurement

Technical specification, technical and commercial bid comparison on a like-for-like basis, and technical negotiation of the EPC contract, through to an award recommendation ready for signature. A separate fixed-price module.

Owner's Engineering

Design reviews, grid connection, FAT and SAT, and an acceptance recommendation. Fixed price per phase. Decisions and formal acceptance remain with the client; an extension with a written power of attorney is available.

Technical Due Diligence

A red-flag check before an acquisition, or technical due diligence to an agreed scope. The result is a report with findings, red flags, risks and recommended actions.

Grid connection in Germany

The grid connection shapes the project.

In Germany, BESS are connected under the technical connection rules VDE-AR-N 4110 (medium voltage), 4120 (high voltage) and 4130 (extra-high voltage). The responsible grid operator applies them, often with its own supplementary requirements and procedures.

  1. 01

    Assess the grid connection offer

Connection point, import and export capacity, operating restrictions, deadlines and connection costs.

  2. 02

    Connection concept and design

Conceptual design of transformer and substation, at 110 kV and above together with specialist partners. No detailed drawings.

  3. 03

    Request and assess compliance evidence

We request the evidence required under VDE-AR-N 4110/4120/4130 from suppliers and assess it. We do not prepare or certify it.

  4. 04

    Negotiate the grid connection agreement

Technical requirements, interfaces, cost and schedule assumptions, alongside your legal counsel.

How we work

Working model.

Free of charge, on the status of your project, under NDA if required. It is the basis of our fixed-price offer.

  2. Fixed price per phase

Scope, assumptions and client contributions with agreed deadlines are set out in the offer.

  3. Contracts

We negotiate technical and commercial content together with your procurement team and legal counsel. Legal review and drafting stay with your counsel.

  4. Not included

Site supervision, detailed drawings, and responsibility for schedule and cost.
